All-weather climatological stations in the Carpathian Mountains - Hungary
For a development project on the Hungarian hydrometrical network operated by the Hungarian Meteorological Service (OMSZ), 141 new meteorological measuring stations were installed across the country.
The all-weater climate stations have to provide reliable and accurate data in all climatic conditions in Hungary. Especially in the Carpathian Basin, climate is very changeable. The annual average of the precipitation is 500-750 mm - liquid or solid.
During the preparatory phase the OMSZ did a market research, and as a result they selected the OTT Pluvio² as the best solution.

For a development project on the Hungarian hydrometrical network operated by the Hungarian Meteorological Service (OMSZ), 141 new meteorological measuring stations were installed across the country. The technical specifications of all stations had to meet the requirement of the OMSZ, so the expectations there are on the highest level. During the preparatory phase the OMSZ did a market research, and they found the OTT Pluvio² is the best solution.
Climate-all stations have to provide reliable and accurate data in all climatic conditions in Hungary, in 141 locations. In the Carpathian Basin, climate is very changeable. The annual average of the precipitation is 500-750 mm. It would be liquid or solid. In any month the precipitation may be zero. The new instrument had to measure the very low amount of precipitation, with high accuracy.
Measuring method - the OMSZ would not accept tipping buckets, only equipment which based on the weighing principle.
Datatransmission - the stations had to transmit the data on the existing telemetry system.
OTT Pluvio² - Upgrading the basic meteorological network in Hungary
Before the installation of the sites, the OMSZ tested all instruments in their own laboratory. For this purpose two Pluvio² units were delivered within a very short time. As all stations had to work on the traditional communication network, the Pluvio² units were delivered as sensors only. Thanks to the variety of outputs it was easy to find a system integrator who supplied dataloggers for the complete system. After one year of successful testing the OMSZ took over the new network and even ordered another 15 units of Pluvio². Today, 60% of all meteorological stations in Hungary are using the OTT Pluvio² and OTT Hydromet has become the exclusive supplier for all kinds of precipitation gauges in Hungary.
