Analogously to the high-end pressure cell of the groundwater datalogger OTT Orpheus Mini the OTT CTD is equipped with a long-term stable, ceramic capcitive pressure cell and a precision temperature sensor.
A thin compensating capillary integrated into the kevlar-strengthened probe cable ensures pressure measurements unaffected by atmospheric pressure fluctuations.
The conductivity measuring cell of the OTT CTD is placed in the oval-shaped water let-through of the probe. Two electrodes supply a steady current, two other electrodes measure the voltage drop in the water body. From the current, the measured voltage drop and from temperature an integrated microprocessor calculates the specific conductivity. From this value it can derive salinity and the total amount of dissolved solids (TDS).
The 4-electrode-design and the high-grade graphite electrodes make this measurement method insesitive to contamination and prevent measurement errors due to polarization effects (adsorption of oppositely charged ions to the measurement electrode). |
